8 Generations - 1 Singular Passion

The Burns of North Sligo

For over 280 years the Burns family has been farming and custodians of the land in north Sligo (Edenreagh, Drumfad Moneygold, and Mount Temple). Burns Farm Meats is located in Mount Temple, with our lands spread across Edenreagh, Cliffoney and Moneygold.

The earliest recorded Burns farmer is Patrick Burns, born 1740 his name is on a headstone in the family grave in Ahamlish graveyard in Moneygold.

A Brief History of Burns Farm Meats

Paddy Burns was born in 1918 in Drumfad Co Sligo. He was the first of the Burns family to establish a butcher shop to the family farm.

He married his wife Violet in 1949. The two moved to the new family farm in the early 1950s. From here they started a butchery business where they supplied the local townlands with quality beef, lamb, and pork.

They had five children Helen, May, Gerald, Jimmy and Liam. Violet and her five children played a huge part in the day-to-day running of the farm. The butcher shop was set up on the farm in 1952.

After over 40 years of working from the small butcher shop, a purpose-built processing facility was built in 1994 to enable the business to expand.

The business went from strength to strength and again in 2004, the business now managed by Gerald was expanded again modernizing production facilities and adding more chill space to perfect the art of the dry-aging process. Caroline Burns (Gerald's wife) has also worked in the business from the early 1980s and was ever-present on the road delivering meat while also juggling three children in school, Diarmaid, Cathal and Eamonn.
